Learn more Apostle and Evangelist, called from the tax booth at Capharnaum to follow Christ. He wrote the first Gospel, presenting Jesus as the promised Messias of Israel, and, according to tradition, preached in Ethiopia, where he suffered martyrdom. Patron of bankers and accountants. His Gospel, first among the four, has been the Church's chief catechism from the beginning. His Gospel is the Church's first catechism.
